Essential Oil Safety with Pets in the Home

Apr 1, 2021

The topic of using essential oils around pets is one that has been heavily debated for years. Dr. Janet Roark, a member of doTERRA’s Veterinarian Advisory Board, recently joined Oil Talk to share best practices to keep your fury family members safe when using essential oils.

“Pet have millions more olfactory receptors than humans do, which makes them sensitive to strong smells,” Dr. Roark said. “It’s important to remember just how potent essential oils are in this regard. But the truth is that diffusing essential oils around pets is an excellent way to share the benefits of essential oils with them on a regular basis. Pets can greatly benefit from diffusing essential oils, just like people. However, there are some really important factors to take into consideration.”

Among other tips, Dr. Roark suggests the following:

- Only use tested as pure essential oils.

- When diffusing, you should not use more than 4-6 drops total in a water-based diffuser.

- Be sure to diffuse in an open or well-ventilated area with the door open so your pet can leave the room, if desired.

- If your pet is sensitive to an oil you are diffusing, stop the diffuser and help them get some fresh air.

“It is really good to be careful using essential oils around animals,” Dr. Roark continued, “but let’s not get overly paranoid. Just follow some common sense guidelines and rest assured that you’re helping them.”
